Book review - An Ace up my sleeve by James Hadley Chase
An Ace up my sleeve by James Hadley Chase is yet another thriller that doesn't involve any murder which is quite unusual. Its also one of the third novel that I have read from his collection where a female character is his protagonist.
Helga Rolfe a talented and experienced lawyerin her mid 40s marries a billionaire who is in 60s only for his money and Rolfe wants her manage his business. The man however would outcast her if he gets to know that she has cheated on him as he is a cripple and cant fulfile her sexual needs. Even though she agrees to it she gets obsessed for sex in later time post their wedding. During one of her trip to Europe he meets a young lad(Larry) who is broken and homeless who approaches her for help. She decides to get her sexual desires fulfilled by him and takes him under her wing. However with a bit of twists in the plot Helga is under control of Archer(Ex-colleague) who tries to blackmail her to get him out of his bad financial position.
If Helga surrenders to Archer then she would loose 60Million dollars and will be outcaste by her husband, if Archer goes down then he would end up in prison for his financial crimes. The story then revolves around how Helga and Archer play their cards with each other to get in control of the situation. During the same time Larry comes back in the game to make things better for Helga as he is made to realize his mistake by his close friend Ron.
The plot is so unpredictable and keeps you at the edge of your seat till the end. Each of the characters are described very well and have their own importance w.r.t the way story goes.
I would rate it a 4/5 for the storyline and the design of the character.
Do read the book if you want to read a thrillers which is short and doesn't involve any murders.
